Progesterone is a natural hormone secreted by the ovaries. Production of progesterone ceases when menopause is reached. Progesterone protects against uterine and breast cancers, osteoporosis, fibrocystic disease and ovarian cysts. It dramatically decreases pre and post menopausal symptoms.
Beware of synthetic progestins, which cause side effects such as bloating, headaches, fatigue and weight gain. Synthetic progestins are associated with increasing the risk of cancer. Synthetic hormones, are known to cause significant side effects.
We emphasize use of natural hormones. Using natural progesterone avoids side effects and protects against cancer. Progesterone is very beneficial in treating premenstrual symptoms (PMS) such as mood swings and migraine headaches. At our GIH-Center Clinic, we frequently treat a wide range of female health problems with natural progesterone.
Heavy menstrual flow: Heavy flow is a common sign of progesterone deficiency. In this case the estrogen hormones will dominate causing the lining of the uterus to become very thick. This often results in very heavy menstrual flows.
Cramping & Headaches: Further possible symptoms of low progesterone are cramping, headaches (including migraines) and irritability. Progesterone deficiency can result in PMS, infertility, ovulation dysfunction, increased risk of breast cancer, endometriosis or fibroid tumors of the uterus, weight gain and postmenopausal symptoms.
Benefits of Progesterone
Sleep and Depression: Progesterone at optimal levels improves quality of sleep and is often described as a “feel good” hormone.
Prevention or reduction of Sleep Disturbances: Progesterone modulates growth hormone, thyroid stimulating hormone and melatonin secretion in postmenopausal women. This all helps sleep.
Breast Cancer Protection: Progesterone inhibits the growth and proliferation of human breast cancer cells.
Prevention of Preterm Births and Miscarriages: One of the primary treatments for women who are at risk for preterm delivery is progesterone. Progesterone in the first trimester can reduce the incidence of early termination of pregnancy (miscarriages), while progesterone during the later trimesters can reduce the rate of preterm deliveries.
